Blessed be the proofreaders. Because of them, the new Holman Christian Standard Bible, a 20-year, $10 million translation project, will not have this sentence in Exodus 20:14: "Thou shalt commit adultery." That typo actually DID make it into the 1631 King James version of the Bible.
The Associated Press reports that the Holman Christian Standard Bible is the latest of only a dozen English translations of the Bible produced since the 15th century. The project employed about 100 biblical scholars, linguists, and editors to translate the Bible from the original Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic into modern English. When they finished their work, the proofreaders started theirs.
"Bible readers are less forgiving of errors because they expect perfection in the Bible text," Bible proofreader June Gunden, who founded Peachtree Editorial and Proof- reading along with her husband, Doug, told AP. To keep the importance of their work in perspectiveproofreading can be real drudgerythey have a list of some of the more notorious biblical typos hanging on their wall. The source of these typos is unknown, but AP notes that the list is commonly circulated among Bible collectors.
