An American reporter did a story on gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan, several years before the Afghan conflict. She noted atthat time that women always walked about 5 paces behind their husbands.
Upon her recent return to Kabul she observed that the Afghani women still walk behind their husbands, but now seem to walk even farther back and seem quite happy doing so.
The reporter approached one of the Afghani women and asked: "But why is it that you now even seem happy with the old custom that you tried so hard to change?"
"Land mines!" said the woman.
